Using the body as a navigational device, I investigate the ineffable: non-lingual language and experience, including states of in-becoming and transformation. The art historical period of the traditional grotesque is of great importance to my practice as its hybrid forms symbolize the softening and dissolution of boundaries, gender fluidity, and corporeal excess. They represent a relational, material, and spiritual unbounded-ness; a space where it is impossible for the body to be considered wrong. The hybrid is in a continual state of change, never finite or complete and, as a result, evades categorization or limitation. The hybrid’s duty is to remain outside of language.
My work overlaps with concepts associated with the term “embodied experience”. Embodiment, as I understand it, is a form of direct communication with the physical and the emotional self, perhaps what some might recognize as the soul. In addition, and related to this idea, I am fascinated by situations (or states of embodiment) that could be categorized as spiritual or transcendental as they position the body outside of conventional language in an unknown, silent experience which I associate with the basic nature of the body, poetry, and art.
Attempting to create a heightened sense of inner and outer embodiment without delving into the realm of “self-care” or sheer sensation, I traverse form via silence, metaphor, myth, and symbol. My aim is to connect with a constantly shifting Self, the soul, and the sacred.
